Saw Starship Troopers Finally
I’d only seen stray scenes here and there of Starship Troopers, and the cinematic parallels with Triumph of the Will left a bitter, quasi-fascistic taste, but then I read somewhere that it was satire so I finally watched it last night and thoroughly enjoyed it, even and especially when it subtly reminded me that I shouldn’t enjoy it too much. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie subtly deploy its lack of subtlety — in characterization, story and mise-en-scene.*
Neil Patrick Harris brings his customary awesome, but Dina Meyer was absolutely riveting as a woman who loved with all the heat of her own hate.
