3D’s Time Is Now. Unless It Isn’t

January 12, 2009

Major 3D movies, including the first non-fiction film by James Cameron since Titanic, are on the way, but apparently making and showing these movies is expensive, and the distribution infrastructure is not there yet.

I’m posting this because I’ve long thought 3D is artistically superior to standard 2D. I’m basing this on my hazy memory of watching Alfred Hitchcock’s one 3D film, Dial M for Murder, which made subtle use of the technique to provide a claustrophobic feeling to a story that basically takes place in one room.

Have you seen Coraline 3D? You should see it before it gets replaced by the Jonas Bro’s movie. Coraline is the good stuff.

This visit to 3D land didn’t leave me with the headache it has in the past, and was used to wonderfully subtle effect, rather than used to shove things in your face.
